What Is Qigong(氣功) ?

Qigong, Chi Kung, Chi Gung are all synonyms of “Qigong” a centuries-old system which unifies the co-ordination of body (postures and / or movement), deep breathing, and guided meditation to improve the of one’s health, spirituality, and martial-arts training.

Qi means “vital energy”, and gong means “cultivation” hence Qi Gong can be translated as “the art of vital-energy cultivation”. Qigong is An ancient Chinese Health care system that integrates Physical posture (Body) , Breathing techniques (Breath) & Focused intent (Mind)

Types of Qigong:

There are different types of Qigong, all of which emphasize on harmonization of mind and body through breathing exercises, meditations, body movements and postures. Below are few types of Qigong methods which IWCA teaches.

Overall Health Maintenance Qigong:

The main focus of the Health maintenance qigong is to holistically work on different aspects of the body creating better health, strengthen the entire system and improve overall well being of the practitioner. These daily practices take very minimal time to implement and can be done at any place with little or no equipments. Removal of stagnant qi or energy blockages these qigong practices enhance Qi circulation in the body there by preventing wear and tear of the body due to age or exertion.

Martial Qigong: Kungfu Qigong or Warrior Qigong:

Martial or Kung Fu Qigong was started thousands of years ago by warriors & soldiers to develop their physical body and internal energy to survive in battle and defeat their enemy. It’s primary objective was to protect & toughen the body to absorb blows from kicks punches and also weapons. Also to strengthen their emotions and spirit to face physically and mentally demanding conditions of war. Kungfu Qigong starts soft with internal Neigong meditations but then turns into hard Qigong when the practitioner starts breaking boards and wooden objects on different parts of his or her body.

Made popular by the Shaolin temple, these set of Qigong exercises are practiced to gain some sort of abilities through training like speed, stamina and dexterity etc. Martial Qigong not only helps martial artists to boost their agility and enhance stamina they are equally beneficial for any office-goer or sports person to enhance their physical & mental abilities.

Other Qigong categories:

Medical Qigong: These set of Qigong exercises specifically work on addressing a specific imbalance or disharmony in the body for a specific period till the disharmony is gone & then the exercise is no longer needed. It involves the use of breathing exercises, meditation and gentle movements by emphasizing on the internal organs of the body. The application and selection of the exercises of Medical Qigong requires training and skill in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Medical Qigong is beyond the scope of normal practitioners and it is not the subject of this site.

Spiritual & Scholarly or Intellectual Qigong: These are various other categories of Qigong which are not the subject of this site. In future these topics will be discussed via series of articles in the Blog section.
