About Kali Escrima

1. Introduction to Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) Kali Eskrima

Kali or Eskrima or Arnis are three interchangeable umbrella terms for the traditional martial arts of the Philippines also referred as "Filipino Martial Arts" (FMA). This national sport and martial art of the Philippines is a combination of both weapon-based & empty hand fighting methods.

Origins: Kali Escrima Arnis collectively called as Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) was developed by the indigenous populations of the Philippines, who used an assorted range of weaponry for combat and self-defense. Encompassing both simple impact and edged weapons, arnis traditionally involved rattan, swords, daggers and spears.

Combat Effectiveness: In 1521, equipped with nothing more than bladed weapons and their fearsome arnis abilities, Filipino islanders defeated Ferdinand Magellan’s armored, musket-bearing Spanish conquistador forces when they tried to invade. Defensive aspects of Kali Escrima encompass hand-to-hand combat, grappling and weapon disarming techniques. On the other hand, the fighting style also includes the use of bladed weapons and sticks, in addition to improvised weapons.

Classification of FMA systems: There are many FMA styles across Philippines. These indigenous systems were inherited by families, forged under real battle conditions and over the period evolved into their current forms For broad understanding the FMA styles can be classified as follows:

  • Sports based systems : Focus only on the sports aspects of FMA i.e. Arnis stick fighting etc.
  • Specialized systems : Specializes only on particular aspects of FMA i.e. Empty hand, Kicking, Grappling or any specific weapons like Knife fighting, Single stick or double sticks etc.
  • Military systems : Combines the core & lethal elements of both empty hand & weapons based systems of FMA for military perspective. Dekiti Tirsia Siradas system like the Pekiti Tirsia Kali is one such is Military FMA system.

Dekiti Tirsia Siradas – The international Military FMA system of Kali Escrima is now available in India.

4. Empty Hands & Weapon systems of FMA

Filipino Martial Arts is a vast ocean of cutting edge martial skills. FMA trains one to develop exceptional ability to fight with weapons or empty hands interchangeably and to turn ordinary household items into lethal weapons. The FMA training begins with weapons because they give an edge in real fights and any object that can be picked up can be used as a weapon using FMA techniques especially against armed assailants. Empty hands training is then taught as the stick is merely an extension of the hand.

Weapons based methods:

  • Impact Weapons : Aggressive, defensive & controlling methods w.r.t. Short sticks (Rattan Canes), Solo baston (single stick), Double Baston (double stick), Bati-Bati (butt of stick methods)
  • Edged Weapons: Aggressive, defensive & controlling methods w.r.t. edged or bladed weapons like Dagger, Knife, Karambit, Balisong Knife.
  • Ballistics Weapons: Defensive & disarming methods w.r.t. ballistic weapons like guns, pistols, revolvers, rifles & other military armaments

Improvised weapons based methods:

  • Everyday objects as weapons: Turing everyday objects into deadly weapons for self protection using FMA philosophy - pens, keychains, keys (push knife grip), umbrellas, rolled-up newspapers/magazines, walking sticks, etc.

Empty hand methods:

  • Mano Mano : Incorporates punches, kicks, elbows, knees, headbutts, finger-strikes, locks, blocks, grappling and disarming techniques
  • Suntukan or Pangamot or Panantukan - empty hands based & punching techniques
  • Sikaran: Kicking techniques, also a kick-based separate art practiced in Rizal province
  • Dumog: Filipino style of grappling
